About Fostering for HSLM
Our Foster Program provides temporary homes for animals who would benefit from extra care outside of the shelter environment. The goal is to reduce the amount of time animals spend in shelter and help them feel more comfortable during their stay.
By opening your home to a foster animal, you can make a world of difference in their life. Most animals thrive in a home environment, and your care and support can help them overcome medical and behavioural challenges. Humane Society London & Middlesex provides all the necessary animal care expenses and supplies, so your time, home, and love are the only things needed. Your act of kindness can truly make a positive impact on a furry friend in need.
Important things to consider:
- Do you have enough time to care for a foster animal? How long will the animal be left alone each day?
- Do you have a separate room to isolate a foster animal if needed?
- How will your current pets (if any) react to having a foster animal in their home?
- Are all members of your household prepared for the commitment and emotions involved with fostering?
- Can you make your home safe for a kitten or puppy by removing any potential hazards?
- Do you have the time and energy to take full responsibility for each animal's care during the entire foster period?
- If your foster animal has a scheduled vet appointment, are you committed to driving them to the shelter, even if in the middle of the day?
Animals who may enter foster care include those who are sick or recovering, pregnant or nursing mothers, animals awaiting or healing from surgery, orphaned young animals, those with medical or behavioural needs, or individuals who are struggling to adjust to the shelter environment.
